Films are more than a leisurely pursuit. Films are more than entertainment. Films are transformative. Films are transcendental. Films can teach us about the world. Films can teach us the way of life. Films can teach values.
We all have grown up watching films for fun, entertainment, and leisure. But have you ever thought about how instructive and educational films could be?
Films have always been an enjoyable pastime, but there is more to them. Films are also a method of expressing art, a medium of learning and teaching, and educational, instructive, and inspirational. People look at films as a way of escaping from reality to a more comforting imaginary space. Films are a powerful force of artistry that can invoke consciousness.
Apart from entertainment, films play a major role in transforming lives. Films can lead to structural changes, policy making, and even societal development by creating social awareness and aiding dialogues that can cause transformations. Moreover, films can also cause personal and behavioral changes for individuals by creating psychological shifts and mental impact through stories that are deeply rooted in human behavior and values. Individuals gain different perspectives and learn new dimensions about the world around them through stories.
Films have always held an integral place in our culture and society. Films are a reflection of our society. Stories are told through films, which makes films a medium of communication. Films are a way for people to share their stories with the world. Films are a way of connecting worlds as the stories transcend boundaries and borders. In the worldwide scenario, people appreciate the cross-border content. They appreciate art and learn about cultures and places. Films have access to a global community, making them a powerful medium for understanding where the world is at present, where it has been, and where it is headed.
Films are a way to address social concerns. Films reveal the hidden and buried plight faced by the communities, paving the way for addressing the pressing issues. Therefore, films have the power to invoke consciousness and initiate change.
The magic on screen appears because of the magic that happens behind the camera. A lot goes behind the camera to bring what appears on the screen.
Making films is not an easy process. The craft of filmmaking involves extensive research, periods of study, observation, knowledge, and experimentation. The content we watch for 2-3 hours on screen takes months and years of hard work, dedication, research, and effort. Much more drama and action happen behind the camera than happens on camera.
What happens behind the camera is not publicly visible. Many people don’t understand the struggle and process occurring behind the camera. We casually critique a film for not being a hit. The audience makes judgments and comments about what appears on screen. What is obvious is understood.
But people hardly consider how much effort, time, and resources are spent to produce what appears on screen. To make the on-camera reality happen and to make stars shine on camera, hundreds of people sweat behind the camera.
We live in a celebrity-driven age where we take no notice of people who work tirelessly behind the camera. We applaud those who look glamorous on screen, overlooking the unglamorous force behind the camera- the one that makes it all possible. Those who face the public receive fame, appreciation, and limelight. But those who work at the backend (like we say that in corporate language) often get overlooked.
Everyone is important, and everyone is needed to make a film. No one achieves alone. Filmmaking is no single person’s job. It is a mutual effort of hundreds of people. It is the team that works together to make a film.
Shouldn’t we celebrate every single person behind the camera? The crew that puts everything in place for on-camera work to fall in place deserves more than just credits in the credits roll.
As we all know, Psychology is the science of studying behavior, personality, and mind.
Films make an interesting presence in our lives, cultures, and societies. They have a great psychological impact on us. We all have at some point in time, cried after watching a film, imitated our favourite actor’s behaviour, copied their style, felt connected with the songs, and somehow re-created scenarios in our real lives. That is the kind of impact films have on us.
The psychology of filmmaking is a relatively new field. Its focus is on studying the psychological implications in films. It has been a recent interest for researchers who are now exploring the mental effects of films. There are different aspects of filmmaking which includes cinematography, story, direction, music, graphics which can influence people’s emotions, behaviours and perceptions.
Many filmmakers these days are making efforts to focus on the psychological impact of their films on the audience. They are trying to understand people’s perceptions to know what kind of stories they are looking for and how they are going to interpret the story.
Starting from a story to its treatment, everything has a psychological impact on the mind of the audience. The goal of psychology in filmmaking is to understand what the audience experiences emotionally and mentally while they are watching a film. This process of film analysis helps discover the underlying messages in a film. Film psychology helps filmmakers use the knowledge and understanding of audience behaviour for precise depiction in their films.
Films can affect human behavior to an extent that they can either influence humans to get into the darker side or inspire them to change for the better. Films have the power to trigger our thoughts and feelings.
Films impact human behavior through the senses. The impact is such that people try to recreate cinematic situations in their real lives by acting out behaviors appearing on screen or ingesting some values they watch. On the brighter side, films can enhance our awareness by activating our visual, auditory, and spatial senses.
Maybe next time we are going to watch a movie, we can try to understand and analyze the psychological impact that the film has on us.
